Sambenedica!

Sambenedica! This is a very formal and honorary way to respect old people in Sicily. It’s how you would address an old man wearing the coppola (the typical Sicilian cap).

It is so important that in rural and very traditional areas of Sicily, I know sons who would honor their fathers saying “Sambenedica,” which literally means “all the saints bless you (and us, too). It is often used as a toast when you raise a glass of wine.
